The food photography industry can be difficult to break into if you want to take it seriously and get paid for your work. There are a lot of good food photographers out there, so what is going to separate you from the pack and help you build your audience?

One effective way of building your audience on social media is by using food photography hashtags to promote your work. Add Your Location to Your Hashtags

If you’re looking to get work out of your food photography, be sure to add hashtags to your posts. Businesses from your area will more easily be able to find you this way, and if they follow your account, you’ll be showing up in their feed, reminding them of your work whether they inquire to you about business right away or sometime down the line.

Think of it from the perspective of a restaurant owner or marketing manager for restaurants. These are people willing to pay photographers for professional food photography to have their menu photographed, and one of the places they’re likely to look first is Instagram and other social media.

You can add your location to the end of your hashtags like #FoodPhotographerNYC or as stand-alone hashtags like #NewYorkCity.

Hashtags are a simple way to build up your following on social media, which you can then leverage to sell your work or get hired, especially when you’re starting out. After gaining a few thousand followers, it’s even easier to attract more people to follow you because of the phenomenon of social proof.
